1. The first thing to do is to measure the space where your tree is going to stand. You need to make sure that your tree is not too tall, both before you’ve attached the stand and afterwards. You’ll also need to be certain that there is space for your angel. A good rule of thumb is to choose a tree that you can reach the top of if you stretch on your toes. Then you’ll need to measure the width of the space where your tree will stand, because the taller the tree, the wider the base.
2. There is not actually a single species of Christmas tree and the species of tree you choose will affect the decorations you plan on hanging. The main species of Christmas tree are pine (of course!), fir, spruce, Cyprus and cedar although there are 7, 3, 3, 2 and 1 variety of each species that make great Christmas trees respectively. Some have brighter colors, others have a better aroma, some have sturdier branches so work with heavier ornaments, and some retain their needles for longer. So think about how your tree is going to look and then find out which species will work best.
Keep your tree fresh
A dead Christmas tree is one of the saddest sights in the world so use the following tips to keep yours looking as fresh as the day it was cut down.
1. Once your tree has been cut down, trim about an inch off the base and make sure it’s straight so it will stand easily. Trimming the base makes it easier for your tree to take in water so it will stay fresh for longer.
2. If you like to buy your tree long before you actually plan on putting it up then put it in a bucket of warm water and store it in an unheated garage to prevent it from drying out. You can also store it on a porch as long as it is protected from the elements as much as possible.
3. When ‘planting’ your tree make sure you use a stand that can hold at least a gallon of water – and don’t forget to top it up every few hours up as Christmas trees can absorb several quarts of water a day! Keeping it watered will prevent the needles from drying out and dropping off. If the water drops below the base of the tree, the cut end could seal over which will prevent it from being able to absorb any water at all.
4. Don’t put ANYTHING in the water. You may have heard that aspirin, soda water, bleach, salt and sugar (among other items) will keep your tree fresher for longer but I trust the experts and they say that plenty of plain old water is best.
