How to Read Coupons Correctly – Matching Product with Coupon Verbiage

There seems to be some confusion with a recent printable coupon. It is important to read our coupons fully and get the qualifying items. There are many key factors to be aware of.

There is a coupon to save $0.75/1 Post Honey Bunches of Oats Crunch O’s Cereal. This week Tops has this brand on sale for 3/$5.00 (must buy multiples of 3). This coupon is for the CRUNCH O’S variety ONLY. (note pictures below). These are new and now all stores have them yet – I haven’t seen them in my store yet. These coupons CANNOT be used on the regular CRUNCH variety of cereal. That is NOT a proper match! Please do not use these coupons on the regular boxes of crunch cereal (note top left of image above).

On a plus note, the Chocolate variety is sold (well none left at my store) and there was a $1.00/1 Post Honey Bunches of Oats Chocolate Cereal – 2-28-16 RP (exp 04/23/16) that would make them $0.67 a box! 🙂

Main Description

This will be the value of the coupon along with the product you can use the coupon on. It will tell you the value, type of product, sizes, variety or product, etc.

Size

Not always, but many times you will find sizes on coupons. You need to purchase the sizes included on said coupon. If there is no size restriction you can use it on any size of product indicated. Here are some examples of how we often see sizes:

$1.00/2 Colgate 3.0 oz + (you can use on 3.0 oz sizes and up, nothing less)
$1.00/1 Suave 12 – 16 oz (you can only use it on sizes indicated, nothing else)
$2.00/1 Mouthwash excludes trial or travel size (you can use on any size, except the small bottles found in travel/trial section)

Fine Print

The fine print in that tiny writing under the coupon will tell you a lot. It can tell you if there are limits on how many coupons you can use. It may also tell you if there is a size restriction. Don’t forget to read this writing as well.

Expiration Date

Almost every coupon will have an expiration date. You have until midnight on the day of the expiration date to use your coupon.

More to come….
